AmeriCorps
What is the difference between YVCA and AmeriCorps?
The Youth Volunteer Corps (YVC), established in 1987, is a national network of programs. At each individual YVC site age-appropriate projects, selected by students or submitted by non-profit agencies, are designed to be fun and educational. YVC supplies trained Team Leaders to supervise the Youth Volunteers on all projects.
AmeriCorps is a grant that the national YVC office receives from the federal government that allows for the placement of AmeriCorps members across the country at various YVC sites. These members serve as Team Leaders. AmeriCorps is a grant of people to do service and money to support them in their efforts (health care, living stipend and administration costs associated with running an AmeriCorps program).
What would a year of service be like with one of YVC's affiliates?
Members serve for one year for 1700 (full time), 900 (half time) or 300 (minimum time) hours. YVC National Direct AmeriCorps members spend their time with YVC affiliates to engage 11-18 year olds in service and service learning projects. Their main duties include: recruiting Youth Volunteers from a variety of sources, planning projects with youth, agencies, and schools as partners, supervising projects, publishing newsletters, meeting with existing and prospective agency partners and keeping in contact with youth, schools, and agencies.
What are the benefits of serving as an AmeriCorps member?
Members receive a living stipend (unless you are serving in an education award only position), student loan forbearance, uniforms and an education award (upon successful completion of their term of service). Full time members are also eligible for health insurance and child care.
Is there anything else I should know?
The full time positions are a year long commitment to service to your country. If you leave for any reason during your year of service you cannot be replaced, this obviously leaves YVC in a bad position. Please do not apply or accept the position if you cannot seriously commit. The part and minimum time positions must be completed within one year's time but the dates can be flexible in your initial contract depending on the needs of your placement site. (For example many YVC sites bring on minimum time members to help with summer programs and the length of service for the AmeriCorps member may be only 10 weeks.)
How can I apply?
You can apply online with the AmeriCorps National Recruitment Website. Please make sure to select the YVC programs you are interested in to receive your application.
